Minnesota Hockey Favorites

  • Greatest Moment: Game 6, 1991 Stanely Cup Finals. I got see Mario Lemieux hoist the Stanely Cup over his head and skate around Met Center with his teammates. It was a great run for the North Stars, but they fell a bit short.  I was becoming a North Stars addict just before they ditched the State of Hockey for Longhorns & Oil in Texas. Now I am a Wild “partial” season ticket holder. “Let’s Play Hockey!”
  • Favorite All-Time State of Hockey Players: Neal Broten, Willie Plett, Jordan Leopold, Johnny Pohl (his cousin “Theo” played on my softball team back in the day) Wes Walz and Andrew Brunette.
  • Favorite Moment as Hockey fan: My old softball buddy, Tom Garrity used to work for the North Stars, and he was always able to get us access to the “Star Gazers” club.  Years later, at a Wild event to kick-off the 2007 season, I ran into him again, and he hooked us up with access to a great season ticket holder party outside the X.
  • Biggest Personal Achievement, Puck related: Learning the game of hockey  from my college buddies  at Met Center. We would hop in a beater car, grab some tailgate essentials and head to the Met with our college ID’s to buy “Rush Line” tickets on the cheap. I will never forget the Willie Plett days. At first  I had no clue what a blue line, face off or puck was, until they took me under their wing (okay, the beater car was mine, so I provided the wheels) and taught me the ways of the State of Hockey.
  • Favorite North Star Name: Dino Ciccarelli
  • Favorite Met Center Song: The Authority Song by John Cougar Mellencamp during pregame warm-ups in 1984.
  • Best Autograph obtained: My tailgating buddy Justin, gave my son several autographs from the 2009- 2010 Wild team, including: Todd Richards, Mikku Koivuu, Derek Boogard and Niklas Backstrom
  • Favorite All-Time Vendor: Wally the Beerman
  • Greatest Thrills: Seeing the Wild advance to the Western Conference Finals in 2003,  the North Stars run to the Cup Finals in 1991, and watching Broten blast the Vikings horn at the Metrodome in his Team USA “Miracle on Ice” jersey a few years back.
  • Trivia: I can’t skate, or even stand on skates, but I am loving hockey
  • Movie: Miracle. True, it’s my All-Time favorite sports flick. I still tear up for that scene when  the boys are walking  from the locker room to the Arena for their game with the USSR. Wow.
  • Guilty Pleasures: Seeing my son score goals at Ames arena in his Mite League games. It’s almost as good as watching him get base hits in T-ball. Being married to a hockey mom.
