First post from the Sports mom: Target (aka the Big Bullseye) and the 5% Penalty

The Sports Mom sounds off on Target credit cardA MN based big box store is offering a 5% discount on all purchases for those that use the company’s RED credit card.

Typically I’m one to jump on a great deal.  This one has me feeling conflicted.  I’m happy with the current cards in my wallet.  Just adding another card goes against my belief that less is more: the less cards, the better.  Less cards are easier to manage both financially and from a personal privacy perspective.  I don’t really want to dump one out nor do I want to add one to the mix.

I tallied up my annual charges from the big bullseye in hopes that it would leave me feeling like I’m not missing out.  Really, I love that store.  You can guess that the spending tally only added to my frustration.  Now, I can see how much I can stand to ‘save’.

I’m a loyal shopper.  I love that store.  It’s bright, it’s fun.  When I travel and see the bullseye it makes me think of home and I know as long as I see that store, whatever I forgot at home can be replaced.  But now, somehow I’m feeling betrayed, begrudged, do I go as far as to say discriminated against?  I spend my money there, just not using their card.  If I don’t get that card, it now feels like I’m being penalized.  My purchases now cost 5% more than the person next to me using the magical card.

So what to do next?  Recently the competition in the big box stores opened a super center not far away.  I’ve taken a visit there and might even make the switch. Gasp!  I’ve been loyal, but change might be necessary.

It is really NOT a penalty. The card has some pretty high interest rates that make up for their 5% discount.

    The 5% is not a penalty, it’s a benefit.
If one chooses to not have the card, they don’t pay more. Rather, they just don’t get the opportunity to pay less.

5% off is a nice discount over the year.
Also, you don’t need to carry cash, or use a different card. In addition, Target offers automatic payments for the credit card, so if one pays off the balance each month, there is never a late fee or an interest charge.

    It’s a win for everyone!

But, if one has an issue with getting another credit card, that’s one’s choice. But remember, your only “penalizing” yourself! :-)
