On this day in Minnesota sports history, July 19, 1982, Kent Hrbek was a Rookie Phenom who was batting for his dad. This Sports Daddy was a high school senior who had just made a bet with his Forensics (Debate) coach which guaranteed that the Minnesota Twins would win the World Series within five years.
That’s right, I was in debate, and I was tired of losing baseball arguments with fellow team members and coaches who insisted that the Twins “sucked.” While the Twins would eventually finish 1982 with a paltry 62-100 record, I remained confident that they would be turn it around sooner than people thought. I was naive and put my money on the table.
I was confident that players like Frank Viola, Gary Gaetti and Tom Brunanskly would elevate the new tenants of the Hubert H. Humphrey Metrodome into champions
In my opinion the best player on the Twins roster at that time was a young, Minnesota home grown slugger named Kent Hrbek. More…

In 1987, I was college student attending my first Spring Training games in Florida when I first met Harmon Killebrew.
Today, the Minnesota Twins legend, Hall of Fame baseball player passed away. As I listened to fans calling into local Twin Cities Sports station KFAN all day to share their stories about the Killer, I reflected on my encounter 24 years ago. Read more…

As pitchers and catchers get set to report to Spring Training in Florida, many many Minnesota sports fans are dealing with the pain from the Cheesehead Super Bowl afterglow in freezing temperatures. As a fan of all the teams in our wonderful sports state, I give you this slight hope:

The first time I witnessed Bert Blyleven, the non-pitcher, the prankster in action was on TV when a local station.
In the segment, it showed Bert doing crazy things like giving “rookies the hot shoe” and making weird faces, and wearing goofy glasses. There has to be that type of player on every team. The guy that keeps thing loose, and makes everybody around him less tense. Read on…
