I love and I hate, I hate and I love. Last weekend I drove like a trucker from my southern Twin Cities suburban home to Ishpeming, MI for a Packer fans Super Bowl party.
It was the best of times, and it was the worst of times.
I loved seeing my old friend Wales, a buddy of mine from the St. Paul Park days when I was single and far from being TheSportsdaddy of today. We watched over a decade worth of NFL games, including 11 straight Super Bowl’s and over 30 border battles. Needless to say, he is a Packer’s fan. I hated seeing his team win on Super Bowl Sunday. It all started 18 years ago, when my friend “Wales” a cheesehead from the Michigan Upper Pennisula told me,
“Man, it’s all about geography! You and I are the same guy except I grew up in God’s Country, and you grew up in South Dakota! It’s great that you cheer for the team that was closest to you when you grew up. That’s the NFL man, it’s just geography!”
His words are so true. Read more…

I have been staying up late a lot lately. I have to admit, it is one of my favorite times of year when the Twins go out to the left coast for long string of away games.
But this year, it has been enhanced by a surprise showing as the Gophers baseball program has won it’s first 2 games in the NCAA tournament. With big wins over Cal State Fullerton, and New Mexico, the Goldies have given us diehard baseball fans a reason to flip channels between Twins/Mariners and Twins/A’s games to watch ESPNU while burning the midnight oil.
It has been fun for me, surfing the web, learning more about social media, and watching baseball. The Twins have been hurt, and the games with Seattle were a downer because of that, but those darn pesky Gophers have given Minnesotans a reason to smile and Tweet.
It also allows me the excuse to sleep in on the weekend. With the wife’s blessing (yes, I am making up for it next weekend) I have been waking up to the smell of fresh coffee, and hot breakfast well after the crack of dawn, wake up sounds of our toddler and kindergarten off-spring.
Tonight is a big game for the Gophers as they will face the winner of Cal State Fullerton/New Mexico at 10 PM CDT. I am not sure I’ll be able to stay awake for that one, with a Monday Morning trip to the office at stake. But I am 100% confident, that I will be falling asleep to, then dreaming about the sounds of aluminum bat tings.
Go Gophers, and best of luck!

After watching a gruelling 14 game road-trip end with a 5-9 record the Twins exposed their weakness that has been so obvious since the Seattle games earlier in August. The Bullpen has been brutal, and cannot be trusted to hold a lead.
I once heard that the definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again. Well, I must be insane watching this team do the same thing day after day, year after year. It’s frustrating, knowing that the opportunity to win is there, but the resources the Twins have were not used to fix a glaring problem.
I am almost bored with the pattern:
Each season, the Twins put together a competitive team, a sleeper, that plays fundamental baseball well enough to stay competitive. BUT when the time comes to put things into overdrive, and buy insurance to reinforce, or improve a weak spot (this year, it was the bullpen, after Pat Neshek was injured) the organization fails to fix it. It’s hard to win the big one when the team keeps spiting itself.
Teams like Boston or Los Angeles will go out and grab the resources, the Twins will not. It’s called money ball I guess, and the Twins are good at it, but it will never get us that Magic like ’87 or ’91. I keep watching, I keep buying tickets, and I get crazier every year.
