Minnesota Twins Books in my basement library 0

Posted on September 25, 2010 by Marcus "Mookie" Anderson

I love reading baseball books. Ever since I was a kid, my favorite additional pastime  has been to pick up a book about the sport I love and read it. Of late, I have enjoyed going to garage sales, library scale down events, and even used book shops  in the Twin Cities to buy baseball books.

My wife thinks I am crazy to have so many books in the office, and  believes that they just collect dust and take up space. But, over the years, I have read almost every book that I have found. I will review each of these books soon, but thought I would share a partial list of a few of my favorite Twins books.  Most of these re available via eBay, or Amazon.

50 Greatest Twins list of players: Best of all-time & legends game 2

Posted on September 05, 2010 by Marcus "Mookie" Anderson

Kirby Puckett Minnesota Twins baseball cardIn 2010 the 50 greatest Twins list of all time was announced, commemorating the 50th season of franchise’s existence.

In early September that year, I spent a good part of the weekend watching the ’10 version of the Minnesota Twins play some great baseball vs. the Texas Rangers. The pennant race was heating up, and Twins on the field were playing like real ball players who like to play in October.

At Target Field that weekend, many of the greatest Twins of all time (many who played deep into cold weather of the Fall) reunited to play a “legends” game. It was pure pleasure to watch the “Boy’s of Summer” take to the new outdoor field in Minnesota and try to recapture their “Glory Day.”

The highlight of the Legends Game for me was watching Kent Hrbek put his own special mark on Target Field. T-Rex, as he was known back in the day, tried to make one of his patented foul ball catches near first base, but this time instead of getting Metrodome rug burn, he dented out a chunk of the new Twins infield grass. It’s a good thing Hrbie has a sense of humor.

The 50 Greatest Twins list was  voted on by a panel of print, radio, and television journalists, plus senior members of the Minnesota Twins staff.

Here is the entire list of players. I will create links to each player, as I blog about each one in the typical Sports Daddy story telling tone.

Quotes: Baseball trading cards, what to do with the commons & WASPS? 2

Posted on June 10, 2010 by Marcus "Mookie" Anderson

“He fakes a bluff.”
-Ron Fairly

Really? Was he bluffing with this quote? Not likely.

Ron Fairly was one of those players who made the best out of his days in Major Leagues. He was an All-Star twice, and batted just above .250 for his entire career. He played in 4 World Series, including 1965, where he launched 2 bombs for the Dodgers over the Twins. He was never a household name or baseball legend, but 90% of the league can say the same thing.

I remember getting several of his baseball cards in the wax packs of TOPPS bubble gum back in the 70′s. For some reason, I always seemed top open up a pack, hoping for a Bert Blyleven, Harmon Killerbrew or Rod Carew, and ending up getting a Ralph Garr, Ron Fairly or Ken McMullen. “Commons” is what we would call these cards, and they were of little value to us, the kids on the streets in Watertown, SD.

I find Fairly’s quote entertaining, because in a way it too, sums up my entire career wrapped into a life of ups and downs. I am not a star, corporate executive or upper class. I am a plain old WASP (White Angle Saxon Male) from the midwest, with a college education, a wife, 2 kids and a Ford-150. I vote my conscience, don’t like conflicts, pay my taxes and go to church. I am not a boat rocker. I learned along time ago that the higher up the ladder you climb, the more of your ass is exposed to those looking up at it.

That being said, I can’t help that the ills of history all seem to be blamed on people just like me; the commons, the grunts of society, the Norms.

Am I just faking my bluff?
